“Daaaaaaaaaaaa BEARS!” - “Bill Swerski's Superfans" skit on Saturday Night Live
It’s become such a common phrase that if you tell someone you’re from Chicago or that you’re a Bears fan, it’s inevitable that you’ll hear “DAAAAA BEARSSSSS" in dat over-the-top Chicaaago aaaccent. But what some people might not know or remember was that the whole thing got its start on the wildly popular 1990s Saturday Night Live skit called ““Bill Swerski's Superfine”!
“Bill Swerski's Superfans” was a recurring sketch about a television program (similar to the set-up of another popular SNL sketch, Wayne’s World) that took place in Mike Ditka’s bar, where a group of Chicago sports fans (played by Joe Mantegna, Chris Farley (#RIP), Mike Myers, and Robert Smigel) obsessed about any topic at hand while drinking beer and stuffing down large quantities of (delicious) meats. All of the characters wore dark sunglasses and thick mustaches to resemble Ditka, the popular coach of the Bears at the time and also the idol of all the “superfans". The group discussed upcoming sporting events and would inevitably predict a huge victory for the Chicago team, using an exaggerated Chicago aaaaccent and normally culminating in a uniform toast to "Da Bearss" and "Da Bullss”. Fun fact? When The Chicago Bears fired legendary coach Mike Ditka on January 5, 1993, the recurring "Super Fans" characters wrote a protest letter to the team during that week’s SNL cold open, with Ditka himself making an appearance at the end!
